The Reality Behind Wedding Videography Costs

Evaluating Choices, Wedding Video Advice

back to THE MAIN BLOG

When couples begin planning their wedding, they often set a budget for a videographer early on—entirely reasonable, but when they start reaching out to studios to book, they can find that prices have changed significantly.

This can lead to frustration and confusion, especially when every studio they love seems to exceed their budget. It’s easy to wonder if these services are overpriced or if they’re simply looking in the wrong place.

Understanding the Cost of Wedding Videography

It’s common for couples to say they don’t want anything “fancy,” thinking this will help keep costs down. However, the cost of wedding videography isn’t about adding special effects or luxurious extras—it’s about the time and effort required to tell your story.

Explore our portfolio to see how we craft meaningful stories that go beyond just capturing moments.

Here’s what that involves:

  • Storytelling: Creating a compelling narrative of your wedding day requires careful selection and arrangement of footage. This isn’t just about capturing events but about conveying the emotion and significance of the day.
  • Music Selection: Finding the right music to match your video takes time and a deep understanding of the mood you want to convey. It’s not just background noise; it’s a crucial element that enhances the storytelling.
  • Culling Footage: Sorting through hours of footage to select the best moments is a meticulous process. It’s about ensuring that every shot included in the final video adds value and meaning.
  • Color Grading: Achieving the right look and feel in your video requires professional color grading. This process ensures that your video has a consistent, polished aesthetic that complements the tone of your day.

These processes are what make wedding videography more than just point-and-shoot—it’s a craft that requires time, skill, and artistry. View examples of our work to see how these elements come together in a final product.

Understanding How Much Coverage You Need

A Common Request is to Reduce Coverage Time

Coverage time is one of the places you can look into when you’re trying to stay within a certain price point for your videography. But it’s important to really keep in mind what that means.

What I’ll often here is that couples don’t need the entire day filmed. Which is understandable, some people just aren’t into the getting ready portion of the day.

So that leaves: first look, ceremony, cocktail hour/photo sessions, reception: introductions, first dance, toasts, parent dances, and cake cutting.

When you break it down, that’s still a 7-8 hour day of filming (we do get a dinner break in there, too), which doesn’t significantly reduce the workload or cost. The length of time needed to capture these important moments, coupled with the post-production work required, means that cutting out a few hours doesn’t necessarily equate to a significantly lower price.

Also keep in mind, we do try to build in buffer time. Why? Because we know things don’t run on time, no matter how well intentioned or well planned. It is very rare for a wedding to run on schedule. It’s a live event—things happen that shift your timeline.

Consider the Type of Studio You’re Inquiring With

Another factor that influences pricing is the type of studio you choose. Boutique studios, large regional companies, and cooperatives each offer different experiences and pricing structures.

  • Boutique studios often provide a more personalized service with a focus on artistry and storytelling, which can come at a higher price. They take very few weddings per year.
  • Large regional companies may have more standardized offerings, with a focus on volume, potentially offering lower prices but with less customization.
  • Cooperatives or collectives often bring together several videographers under one brand, providing flexibility in pricing and styles but potentially less consistency in the final product.

Understanding these differences can help you make a more informed decision that aligns with your priorities and budget.

What Should You Do?

If you’re in the early stages of planning, take time to think about what matters most to you. If having a high-quality video that you’ll cherish for years is a priority, it may be worth adjusting your budget to align with the kind of service and product you’re looking for.

Here are some tips to guide your decisions:

1. Know Your Priorities

If video is an essential part of how you want to remember your wedding day, recognize that this is an investment in preserving those memories. The price reflects the value and care that goes into creating something truly special.

2. Understand the Process:

Quality videography isn’t about being fancy—it’s about the time-consuming, detailed work that goes into storytelling, music selection, footage culling, and color grading. These elements are what make your wedding video a unique and cherished keepsake—not crazy transitions.

3. Clarify Your Needs:

If you think you need less coverage, discuss this in detail with your videographer. Understand what “less” actually means in terms of hours and services, and be realistic about what’s involved in capturing the moments that matter most to you.

4. Start Planning Early:

High-quality videographers are often booked well in advance. Starting your search early gives you the best chance of securing the vendor you want before your date is taken.

Value Over Cost:

The memories captured in your wedding video can become a lasting heirloom, making it a worthwhile investment.Consider what other adjustments might make it possible to hire a videographer whose work you love.

Why This Matters

Your wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime event, and how you choose to remember it is up to you.

By investing in a videographer who understands your vision and the importance of storytelling, you’re not just documenting the day—you’re creating a lasting memory of one of the most significant moments of your life.
